It was the homeland of the mathematician Archimedes, who headed its defense during the Roman siege in 212 BC. Syracuse was the capital city of Sicily for centuries, until its conquest by the Arabs in 878.

Noto is famous for being the city of Baroque. Rebuilt after the terrible earthquake of 1693, its historic center is in Baroque style, which attracts millions of visitors for its beauty.
